M: It’s really hot today. The temperature must be over a hundred. The forecast is for rain in the afternoon.
W: We’d better put off the picnic until tomorrow.
Text 2
M: I hear that Mr. Hill has left. Has anybody been appointed to take his place?
W: I believe, several men applied for the job but nothing has been decided yet.
Text 3
W: Hello! You’re looking very pleased with yourself.
M: I am! I’ve just passed my driving test.
W: Well done!
Text 4
M: You look upset. What’s wrong?
W: The electric company is going to shut off our services.
M: Are we behind on the bills?
W: Yes, but why didn’t you take care of that bill?
Text 5
M: We need some eggs, Catherine.
W: I’ll drive out to the farm and get them tomorrow.
M: It’ll be quicker to go to the market or to the little shop across the road.
W: I know, but I happen to know that they haven’t been on the shelves for a long time.

W: Thanks for coming golfing with me today, Carl.
M: No problem, Marge. I need to work on my swing. And this weather is just amazing.
W: I only play on days like this—sunny but cool with a soft breeze.
M: How long has it been since you last played?
W: Too long—almost six months. I used to play at least once a month, though.
M: Oh, really? I try to play at least once every other week.
W: Well, then you can help me with my game.
M: No problem.

M: Wow, that was an amazing show!
W: Yeah, the crowd was totally out of control.
M: I know! Did you see what that guy did in the front of the stage?
W: You mean the guy who took a dive into the audience from the stage?
M: Yeah! He landed directly in the middle of all those crazy people and was carried to a safe place by the crowd. It was so cool!
W: What did you think of the opening band?
M: To be honest, that’s who I really went there to see.

M: I’m sorry I haven’t, Mrs. Smith. I’ve already finished the exercises, but I can’t find my exercise book anywhere now.
W: Really? I don’t understand why you are always forgetting to hand in your exercise book. You are lying.
M: Mrs. Smith, I’m not lying this time.
W: I’m really angry with you. If you don’t tell me the truth, I’ll have to call your parents after class.
M: I’m sorry my parents have gone to Beijing. They’ll be back in half a month.
W: I don’t believe you. It was yesterday that I saw your parents in the supermarket. You’re very clever, but you never spend your time doing your math exercises. Sit down, please. Let’s get down to business.
Text 9
W: We are going to put on a performance.
M: Really? When?
W: On May 4.We have been preparing for it for two months.
M: Where are you going to put it on? In your school?
W: No. At the People’s Theatre.
M: If I remember correctly, you put it on at the Youth Square last year.
W: Yeah. But it is under repair now.
M: But why are you doing that? To collect money for repairing the Youth Square?
W: No. We want to collect money and send it to Project Hope.
M: That sounds like a good idea. Good luck to you.
W: Thanks a lot.

Morning, boys and girls. I’m going to tell you the arrangements for this year’s Swimming Competition. So listen carefully.
The Swimming Competition will be held next Saturday. We’ll meet here at the school hall first before going to the city Swimming Pool. A coach will come and pick us up at eight o’clock sharp. So make sure you come on time. If you get here later, you’ll have to stay in the school library.
You should wear your sports uniform and sports shoes that day. Lunch time is from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. There is only a very small shop next to the pool, so it’s much better to bring your own food and drinks with you.
When you get to the pool, please remember not to run around. Then ground is usually slippery and it’s easy to slip and fall.
One last thing. If you’re swimming that day but don’t feel well, please tell me or the other teachers. When you’re sick, you should not swim. Safety is very important. I hope we’ll enjoy the event next Saturday.
