M: Yes. Although the fire spread quickly, everybody was able to escape.

M: I hope it’ll be fine tomorrow. I’m going boating with Tom.
W: Oh, I think it will be fine.
M: Are you sure?
W: Yes. I heard it on the radio.
Text 3
W: Look! The room is full of smoke. I can hardly breathe.
M: I agree. Smoking should not be permitted here in this room.
W: That’s right. Nowadays, people who smoke seldom think of others.
Text 4
W: Do you have any hobbies?
M: I like to paint.
W: What kind of things do you paint?
M: Mainly rivers and mountains.
Text 5
W: Do you realize it’s November already? Before you know it, Thanksgiving will be here.
M: Gee, you’re right. It’s time we decided what we are going to do this year. Do you feel like inviting your sister and her family over?
W: Sure. After all, they had us over last year.
M: Good. That’s settled. Why don’t you give them a call and see if they can come?
W: Sure. Say, Randy, can you help me with the shopping? We need to get a turkey.
M: Right. Let’s get a nice big one, so we’ll have plenty of leftover to make sandwiches with.
Text 6
W: Good afternoon. Can I help you, sir?
M: I made a reservation last week by the name of Benjamin. We’ve just arrived.
W: A minute, please. Benjamin… Oh, yes, here it is. One double room for a whole week. Here is the registration card. Would you please fill this form out, sir?
M: Love to! (A few minutes later) Done! Here you are.
W: Thank you. Now everything is in order. Your room number is 8715.
M: Is it on the 87th floor?
W: No, sir. In China, eight is a lucky number. It’s actually on the 7th floor.
M: Thank you. By the way, is there a dressing table in the room?
W: Yes. A traditional wooden one.
Text 7
W: Hi, Mike. What have you been up to?
M: Not much. I started exercising.
W: Trying to get in shape?
M: Yeah, and I need to start improving my health.
W: Me, too. What are you doing besides exercising?
M: That’s about all.
W: I think if you eat better, it will also help a lot.
M: Sleep is important, too. I heard people who sleep an average of eight hours a day have less health problems.
W: Looks like there are a lot of things to do to stay healthy.
M: True. But I think it is worth it. When you get older, you want to be healthy and active.
W: Absolutely.

Text 9
If you want to eat something, you need money. If you want to go somewhere, you need money. You just can’t do anything without it anymore. But where did money begin? Well, a long, long time ago people began to exchange things with each other. If somebody had a cow and wanted some cloth, he exchanged the cow’s milk for it. People could exchange anything that someone else wanted and could use. So people in different places used different kinds of money, such as sheep, fish and knives. The Japanese exchanged rice, the Chinese used tea, and in Ethiopia they used salt.
After many years people began to use gold, and then they made coins. But coins were heavy, and people didn’t like to carry them, so they started to use paper money. They say the Chinese first used paper money. Today checks are another kind of paper money—you sign your name and tell the bank to pay another person.
