(Text 1)
M: Why don’t you go to a show or something tonight?
W: As a matter of fact, I thought Judy might like to go to a concert.
M: Let’s have a look and see what’s on... You might try the concert at the Festival Hall.
W: That sounds nice.
(Text 2)
W: Do you know if Bill has finished his research paper on computers?
M: I don’t think so. He always seems to put things off until the last minute.
(Text 3)
M: Jessica, could you forward this e-mail to all the club members?
W: Sorry. The computer broke down this morning. I’ll do it for you as soon as I have it fixed.
(Text 4)
W: You seem to have a lot of work at your office. You’re always staying late and working overtime.
M: That’s true, but I think the work is interesting and fun. I don’t mind the extra hours at all.
(Text 5)
M: How is Jane and Bill’s new house?
W: It’s really comfortable, but they’re tired of having to hear the planes go over their house at all hours.
M: I think they’ll get used to it soon.
(Text 6 )
W: Did you see today’s newspaper? That building over there in Centerville was just struck by lightning for the fourth time.
M: I’m not surprised. If the conditions for lightning to strike are right one time, they might be as good another time.
W: Well, I don’t take any chances. If I’m caught in a thunderstorm, I will look for a building or a closed car. Also, I was told that if you’re stuck outdoors, the best thing you can do is to keep yourself close to the ground and avoid bodies of water.
M: To tell you the truth, even when I’m at home, I don’t take baths or showers during a thunderstorm. And
I don’t use anything that works electrically. Maybe I’m too anxious.
W: I wouldn’t say that. According to the article, lightning starts thousands of fires every year in the United States alone. Hundreds of people are injured or even killed. I think you’re just being sensible.
(Text 7)
W: Good morning. What seems to be the problem?
M: Good morning, Mrs Brown. I have a cough and a fever and I feel very tired all the time.
W: And how long have you been feeling like this?
M: Three days now.
W: Let me have a look. Open your mouth please. Wider please. Now say AHH.
M: AHHH.
W: Now take your shirt off please. Breathe in—Breathe out—OK, you can put your shirt back on now.
M: What seems to be the problem? Do I suffer from bird flu or is there something wrong with my lung?
W: Oh, no. Don’t be so nervous. You just have a bad cold. Do you work in an air-conditioned office?
M: Yes, I do.
W: I thought so. I see many people who work in air-conditioned offices. It’s the air conditioning, you see. It’s really not very good for your health.
M: So what would you suggest, doctor?
W: I suggest you get out of the office as regularly as possible. Walk around, and get some fresh air. That will help. You also need to get more exercise. Do you play any sports?
M: I sometimes play tennis in summer, but to be honest, I’m too busy to get regular exercise.
W: Then I suggest you try playing more often. Say once a week.
M: OK, no problem. Thank you doctor. Bye.
W: Bye.
(Text 8)
M: I can’t see why you need to go out to enjoy yourself. Why can’t you have a nice time, watching TV with me? And when you are at home, you’re either reading a book or something, you never actually sit and enjoy a good program with me.
W: I don’t want to watch TV. I find it boring.
M: Oh, it’s not always boring. Come off it!
W: Well, I’m sorry, but it usually is. I just don’t think watching all this TV is good for me. I can only watch about one program a week.
M: So you think it’s better to go out, do you?
W: Well, I just feel there are lots of things to do that you can learn from and to be watching TV is not something I want to do.
M: OK, you name something that we can share.
W: What about when we do our music, for example, we share that.
(Text 9)
W: Hello, Old English Restaurant. Can I help you?
M: Yes. I’d like to book a table for tonight.
W: Yes, sir. What time?
M: Eight o’clock.
W: Certainly. For how many people?
M: There are ten of us.
W: Ten of you! But we don’t usually accept large parties, sir.
M: I know, but we are regular customers.
W: What’s your name please, sir?
M: Michael Peterson.
W: Mr. Peterson...of course! That’ll be all right. We’ll put two tables together.
M: Thanks.
W: What food would you prefer for today, sir? We have fresh seafood tonight.
M: No. We like to eat vegetables.
(Text 10)
Now let me tell you what happened to Peter’s hometown. On June 12, Peter had a surprise when he woke up in the morning. He found that the floor of his room was flooded. When he looked out of the window, he saw many cars upside down in the street. It was a sad day for Peter’s hometown, which is a mountain city. In the twenty-four hours up to noon, nearly seventeen inches of rain fell. Usually about sixteen inches of rain falls in the whole month of June. Roads were washed away in the peak area. Tons of mud and rocks crashed down on the houses below. Sixty-four people died in the flood and more than 2,500 lost their homes. For some time after the flood, helicopters flew to the people of the place. Tractors and lorries worked hard to clear away the earth. Many people sent money and necessities of life to the victims of the flood and helped them rebuild their hometown.
