M: Shall I call a taxi?
W: The bookstore is only about 10 minutes’ walk.
(Text 2)
W: What are you going to do tonight?
M: I have four letters to write before I prepare for the physics exam.
(Text 3)
W: The children want to stay longer to see the panda.
M: OK. Let them have a good time here.

W: Would you like to take this suit, sir?
M: Well, I like the color and the material. The size is all right, too.
W: Yes, it fits you perfectly.
M: But I’m afraid the price is a little more than I can afford. Perhaps I can look at something else.
(Text 5)
M: I wasn’t able to fall asleep last night.
W: Why didn’t you take a sleeping pill?
M: I don’t like them.

W: Donna Hoover speaking.
M: Dr. Hoover, my name is Edgar Bush. My roommate, John, is in your art history class. Uh... Art History 502?
W: Yes.
M: Well, he is sick and won’t be in your class today. He asked me to bring his term paper to your office.
W: OK. The paper is due by 3 o’clock.
M: I have a class from 1 to 2. I’ll bring it to your office after my class.
W: Well, I have a meeting this afternoon. So you can drop it off with the secretary of the art history department. She’ll see to it that I get it.

W: Hello.
M: Hello, Susan, this is Jim. I’m calling from the bus stop at Pine Street. I’ve been searching for your house for about thirty minutes now, but I can’t seem to find it. I forgot to bring the map you gave me.
W: OK. Wait right where you are. I’ll come and get you.
M: That’s not necessary. If you tell me the directions once again, I’ll probably be all right this time.
W: OK. Can you see a bank on the corner?
M: Yes, there’s one across the street.
W: Well, cross the street and walk past the shoe shop. My house is the seventh house from the corner on your right.
M: OK. Thanks. I’m sure I’ll be able to find it this time.

W: Dad, can I go to a movie this week with Shannon?
M: Let me look at the calendar here. Hmm. When are you thinking about going to a movie?
W: Uh, we’re thinking about seeing a movie on Wednesday after school.
M: Well, that’s not going to work. You haven’t practiced your piano at all for an entire week, so you have to catch up on that.
W: What about Friday?
M: Uh uh. Forget that idea.
W: And Saturday?
M: Well, you have to take an English class in the morning. And then, we have to clean out the garage. You said you’d help. Well, that should only take a couple of hours. And then, after that, you can go to the movie.
W: Yeah. Can I go and see the nine o’clock showing?
M: The five o’clock showing!
W: How about the seven o’clock showing?
M: And why are you so concerned about the show time?
W: Well, I don’t know if I’ll get all of my homework done before then.
M: Sorry, but I want you to get to bed early that night, and so, I can drop you off at the movie theatre about 4:30, so you’ll have time to get tickets.
W: Okay. Thanks, Dad.
(Text 9)
M: So. What’s your uncle like?
W: Oh, very friendly and open-minded. Don’t worry. I’m sure he’ll let you give a performance there. The good thing is that a lot of famous people go there. So do reporters and photographers.
M: Yeah, but what if he doesn’t like our music?
W: He’ll like it. He hasn’t had a live band for a while, so I think he’d like one for a change.

Hello, John. Welcome to my house. I’m really pleased that you can be here to look after my house while I’m away. As you know, I’m going to a conference in London. I hope to have a little time to look around. It’s a great city! I do hope I manage to get to at least some of the theatres and museums. I’m looking forward to all the things I have to do at the conference, too. I’m giving a paper on Tuesday and there are a couple of really exciting events planned later in the conference program. I hope to meet up with an old teacher of mine at the conference. She taught English literature at my old high school and we’ve kept in touch through letters over the years. Would you do me a favor please? I had an appointment with my doctor for a checkup on Thursday, but I don’t think I can go back then. Could you please call him on 8162525 and cancel the appointment for me? Thanks a lot, John. One last thing, when you leave the house, make sure the windows and doors are shut, and set the burglar alarm. The alarm code number is 9120 enter. Have fun! I’ll see you when I get back. This is your friend Martha saying, goodbye.
