M: Excuse me. Could you tell me how much the tie is?
W: Sure. Sixteen dollars for each. You may pay two dollars less for two.
M: Well, I will take two.
(Text 2)
W: What time does the bus leave?
M: Not until 8:30, but I want to get to the bus station by 8:
(Text 3)
M: I’m sorry I couldn’t follow you. Can you repeat what you’ve just said?
W: All right. I’ll tell you again. Do you understand it now?
M: A bit more than last time. But I still don’t catch the main idea.
(Text 4)
M: Have you called the House of Blues yet?
W: Yes, Mr. Atkinson. I reserved a table for three at seven.
M: Good. Thank you.
(Text 5)
M: Simon knows little about history and still less about philosophy.
W: It’s a pity that Ronald is no better than Simon.
(Text 6)
W: Shall I phone and tell your secretary you’re not coming today?
M: Yes, please, dear. Tell her I’ve got a cold and have a headache, but hope to be back in a day or two. You’d better say I’m staying in bed.
W: But you are not in bed! Do you want me to tell a lie?
M: Oh, it’s only a very little one, dear. I’m not making a false excuse. I really have a bad headache.
W: Then put the cigarette out. It’s very foolish of you to smoke when you’ve got a cold.
M: Very well, dear. You’re quite right.
W: You never listen to me.
M: Don’t I?
W: Look, here’s some boiling water. Do as I tell you now. I’ve put something in the water that’ll do you a lot of good. Wrap this cloth round your head and put your nose over the water. That’s right. Breathe in deeply. It’ll do you a lot of good.
M: It smells nice.
W: Now, another deep breath. Now breathe out. Slowly! Now breathe in again. Go on doing that for five minutes while I go and make that phone call to the office.
(Text 7)
W: Transit (Traffic) Information. Can I help you?
M: Hello. I’m lost. I am wondering if you could tell me where the nearest bus stop is?
W: Sure. Can you tell me the nearest cross roads?
M: Let me see. One sign says
W: Just one moment, please.
M: All right.
W: You’re in luck. There’s a stop two blocks from you.
M: Wonderful!
W: Walk west on
M: To my office. It’s on Pine and
W: Take the southbound bus marked Downtown.
M: OK. Thanks!
W: You’d better hurry. The last one stops there in 15 minutes.
(Text 8)
M: Is this all your baggage?
W: Yes. The two cases are fully packed.
M: Hopefully you had no problem going through the checking procedure with the tightening security measures.
W: No, not at all. I placed them on the counter for the officers to double check. They went through both cases and asked me to drink the water in the bottle I was carrying. Anyway that’s what they should do.
M: You are quite understanding. Some people really get annoyed. My car is parked outside. I’ll drive you to the apartment. Because of the jet lag, you probably need some time to recover.
W: How far are we from where I will stay?
M: Your apartment is on campus. It’s about 50 miles from here and it will take 50 minutes or so to get there.
W: Oh, that’s quite a distance. It’s very kind of you to come to the airport to meet me. I really appreciate your help.
(Text 9)
W: Excuse me, Officer. I have just had my money stolen.
M: Before you begin, just calm down a little. Don’t be too excited. It won’t help us catch the thief.
W: Yes. You are right. Where should I start?
M: At the beginning. When did it take place?
W: About 10 minutes ago.
M: And where exactly was this?
W: It was probably on the escalator coming from the underground at Xi’dan. I think somebody had been following me from the time at the bank.
M: The bank?
W: Well, you see. I went to a bank to exchange some checks for cash. I’m only here on a visit, you see.
M: Yes, yes, and how much did you exchange?
W: About 4,500 dollars’ worth.
M: And how much was stolen?
W: All of it.
M: I see. We’ll look into the matter as soon as possible.
(Text 10)
Now that I’ve pulled your tooth, I want to give you some words of advice. Remember that this is surgery. You need to go home and rest for the rest of the day. You shouldn’t do your regular work. Since you’re an adult, it might take you longer to heal than if you were a child.
The most important thing to remember is to apply ice to your cheek immediately when you get home. You can use an ice bag or put some ice in a towel. Hold it on your cheek twenty minutes and then take it off after twenty minutes. Keep this up for four or five hours.
Secondly, don’t wash your mouth today. Tomorrow you should wash your mouth gently every three or four hours with salt water. Continue this washing for several days. Don’t be alarmed if there is some bleeding this morning. A little bleeding is normal after pulling a tooth. That’s all I want to tell you. Call me anytime if you have a lot of bleeding or pain. And remember to apply ice right away.
