W: Yes, you can renew it twice.

W: We are going for a picnic today. Would you like to join us?
M: I’d love to, but the weatherman says it’s going to rain.
W: Don’t believe that. It hasn’t rained for a week and the sky is so blue today.
(Text 6)
M: Hi, Mary. How are you?
W: Fine, John, and you?
M: I am fine, too. By the way, did you go anywhere during the vacation?
W: I didn’t go anywhere. I stayed at home.
M: Did you take a part-time job?
W: No, I took two courses at a summer school.
M: Why was that?
W: I wanted to get ahead a little.
(Text 7)
M: Good morning. Can I help you?
W: Ah, yes. I want to go to New York and I’m not sure of the best way to get there.
M: Well, you could get there by the long distance bus. It’s only $15.
W: Mm, that’s a good idea. How long does it take me to get there?
M: It takes about 10 hours.

W: Why don’t you try h is home number first? Then we can try the office.

W: Let’s go and find another one.

W: Hello. Is this the police?
M: Yes. How can I help you?
W: I’ve been robbed! I was just walking through the Central MTR station when a young man walking in the opposite direction knocked into me. He apologized at once and asked if I was all right. I told him I was fine and smiled at him.
M: Can you describe the man, please?
W: He was a tall young man. He was dressed in a white shirt and jeans. And he was wearing a pair of black glasses, I remember.
M: OK. What happened next?
W: He smiled at me, then hurried away. It was only a few seconds later that I realized my handbag had gone. He must have taken it when he knocked into me. All my keys, money and credit cards are in that bag. Please help me!
M: Please stay calm. We’ll be with you as soon as possible.
(Text 10)
W: Did you watch TV last night?
M: Yes, I did.
W: It was a good game, wasn’t it?
M: Oh, I didn’t watch the football match. I wanted to, but my wife preferred to watch the old film.
W: What a pity. It was quite exciting. Both teams played very well.
M: How did it finish?
W: It finished in a draw. What was the film like?
M: It was quite good. But I missed the beginning of it because I had to eat first.
W: Did your wife enjoy it?
M: No. After half an hour she stopped watching and started to read a book.

Good evening. Tonight’s broadcast brings together music from different corners of the world. The records we have chosen for you are from classical Western music, Indian music and pop. In this broadcast we shall study the language of music. We shall try to find out how music expresses how people feel. You shall hear a Beethoven piano piece and songs sung by a pop group and some black Americans. It will be natural if you like one more than the others. I shall be trying to explain why they are all good music. The feeling in each of the following musical compositions is sadness. You can find sadness in words, in paintings, and in music. Music is one form of arts. It’s like the spoken language, but uses sounds differently. I shall be saying a few words after each record. Now, the piano piece by Beethoven.
