Unit 6
Listening
Jason: Alice, what’s your favourite pet?
Alice: I like cats best.
Jason: Why?
Alice: Well, cats are pleasant to hold and to touch.
Jason: But cats just lie around. They don’t do anything.
Alice: Oh, my cat likes to play. My cat even catches mice.
Jason: And then, cats just do as they wish.
Alice: That’s true, and that’s one of the things I like about cats. They don’t need people. They can be kept more easily than dogs. Dogs need a lot of attention, and they bark noisily.
Jason: I see.
Alice: What about you, Jason? What’s your favourite pet?
Jason: I like fish.
Alice: Fish? Why do you like fish?
Jason: They’re easy to take care of.
Alice: But you can’t play with a fish or even hold it.
Jason: True.
Alice: In fact, you can’t really do anything with a fish, except watch it.
Jason: That’s what I like best. I don’t really have time to take care of a dog or cat. At the same time, it’s nice to watch the fish swim around.
