The campaign for the Republican nomination for President continues in Wyoming and Kansas today. There're 40 delegates up for grabs in the Kansas caucuses and a dozen in Wyoming. After Super Tuesday wins early this week, both Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney are looking the captured momentum . Jeremy Burnfield has more.
Throughout the primary campaign, the candidates' plans for the economy have taken center stage. While many Kansas voters say that the state of the economy is important. Voter Heidler Winterhausen says she expects many voters would look at the candidate's positions on social issues. Winterhausen from Lawrence, Kansas says she is voting for Santorum over Romney.
“I'm assuming that they both can do a good job on fiscal . But the social made the difference.”
While Romney and former Georgia Representative Newt Gingrich both choose not to visit Kansas. Santorum and Representative Ron Paul both made the trips to some far-away states before caucuses day. For NPR News, I'm Jeremy Burnfield in Lawrence, Kansas.
A Republican caucuses is also underway in the US Virgin Islands. Mitt Romney gained all 9 delegates in Wyoming today and won the caucuses in Colorado and Northern Mariana Islands picking up another 9 delegates. Primaries would be held Tuesday in Alabama and Mississippi.
Thousands of Russians rallied again in Moscow today to announce allegedly vote fraud in Sunday's presidential election as well as Parliamentary vote in December. NPR's Martha Wexler reports their demands include early elections and freedom for political prisoners.
Today's event on Moscow's Novy Arbat street was dedicated with thousands of Russians who volunteered this poll action Sunday. Some of them spoke to the crowd about the violations they and their colleagues had witnessed. These included abuse of absent team balloting and changes in final vote tallies in some districts. One of the monitors Yulia Dyrogov summed up what she saw with the slogan that was written above head.
“This was not an election and this is no President” she said meaning Prime Minister Vladimir Putin who claimed victory was 64% of the vote. Another speaker, the head of the independent monitoring group said no one really knows the signs of Putin's win. Martha Wexler, NPR News, Moscow.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met today with Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary General and the Arab League envoy . The Syrian state news agency reports Assad told him there can be no political solution to end the violence in Syria or described as terrorist groups are spurring chaos and instability.
Afghan officials say there're 5 top Taliban leaders now being held at the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba maybe released to the Gulf State of Qatar. The prisoners had met with the delegation from Afghanistan and said they would agree to the transfer as long as they're reunited with their families in Qatar. The US has not yet agreed to the deal but it made as the incentive for the Taliban to take part in peace talks to end the war in Afghanistan.

Police in Nairobi, Kenyan say someone tossed grenades out of a car, the major bus terminal in the capital today. At least 2 people were killed and dozens were wounded. There's been a series of such attacks since October when Kenyan sent troops across the border into Somalia.
Pakistan has named a new chief of military intelligence, one of the most powerful position in the country. NPR's Jackie Northam reports from Islamabad.
The naming of Lieutenant General Zaheerul Islam is a chief of intelligence was not a surprise. Islam is currently army commander in the southern city of Karachi and earlier was the head of the internal security yet at an intelligence agency which still for the militants encountering intelligence. Islam's also spent time in military training programs in the US. Analysts here say it's unlikely there will be an immediate shift policy as Islam takes the helm. It's expected he will be involved in Pakistani efforts to bring the Taliban in the peace negotiations. Islam will replace Lieutenant General Ahmad Shuja Pasha who oversaw intelligence agency through several scandals which brought US Pakistani relations to a new low. The USS Enterprise sets sail in its final deployment tomorrow. During its 50 years in service, the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has played a prominent role in Cuban missile crisis, helped attack Iran from mining the Arabia Gulf and was the setting for the Top Gun move. The Enterprise will head to the Middle East for a 7-month deployment. Captain William Hamilton said the ship is showing its age these days saying it's kind of like when you get older and it's harder to get out of the bed in the morning.
