Text 1
M: Wow, I’m so glad you took me here.
W: Yeah, Beijing Opera is pretty special.
M: I like the costumes and the music. What’s your favorite part?
W: I’ve always liked the different colored faces, even if they’re a little scary sometimes!
Text 2
W: Are you ready to go to the bank with me? It’s 3:30.
M: How long will it take us to get there?
W: 30 minutes.
M: I need another half hour to finish my report. Is that OK?
W: No problem. They close at 5:00 today.
Text 3
W: We’ve already been to several museums and some parks. Where are we going to go today?
M: Remember that guide at the museum? She said we should go to the old neighborhood.
W: What are we going to do there?
M: Spend the day going shopping. I think it’ll be fun.
Text 4
M: You look a little uncomfortable. What’s the matter?
W: Oh, I just don’t eat Thai food very much.
M: Would you like me to order you something else, or would you rather go to that new Italian restaurant?
W: No, we came here to eat, so let’s eat.
Text 5
M: Have you ever read the magazine Film Focus?
W: I’m afraid I haven’t.
M: What a pity! You really should.
W: What’s it like?
M: It introduces the latest films, great directors, and film stars.
W: Let’s buy it!
Text 6
W: Hi. Nice to see you here. How have you been?
M: Hi. I’m good. I’m getting my hair cut today.
W: Your hair is very long. Are you getting it cut short?
M: Not really short. I think shoulder length is fine. Are you getting your hair cut, too?
W: Not today. My friend is getting married, so I’m just getting my hair colored and styled.
M: I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
W: I will take pictures when the hairdresser is done.
M: Oh, it’s my turn now. Talk to you later.
W: OK.
Text 7
M: Hello, San Francisco Garden Hotel. How may I help you?
W: I’d like to see if you have any suites available for the last week of this month.
M: Certainly, madam. How many suites do you need?
W: There are 16 of us in total: seven couples and two guides. The couples can share a suite, but the guides will need their own rooms.
M: All right, let me check what we have available…Well, we have enough suites for all the couples in your group from the 23rd to the 30th. But unfortunately, we don’t have any other suites available then.
W: OK. Maybe the guides could just have double rooms.
M: Sure. We’ve got plenty of those available. Usually, the suites are $300 and the double rooms are $200. But I can get you a weekly rate for both at a discount of 10%.
W: Oh, that sounds perfect. I have my credit card ready.
Text 8
M: Hi, welcome to Carl’s Gas Station. What can I get for you?
W: Fill it up, please.
M: What kind of gas would you like?
W: Oh, the super.
M: I’m sorry. We’re all out of super. We only have regular and plus. Would the plus be OK?
W: Sure. OK.
M: And will you be paying with cash?
W: I’m sorry. I don’t have any cash. Can I use my credit card?
M: I’m sorry. Our credit card machine broke this morning, and the guy hasn’t come to fix it yet. So right now, we can only take cash.
W: Oh…well, can I use my phone to pay?
M: Uh, sure. I guess. If you want, you can send money to my phone and then I’ll pay for the gas for you.
W: That would be super! Thanks so much.

Ladies and gentlemen, you are at the beginning of an amazing journey. It will take all of your physical and mental strength. I would like to congratulate you all for making it this far, but I’m afraid the hardest part is yet to come. During the next couple of weeks, you will visit some villages, temples, and even a school, high in the mountains of the Himalayas. Finally, we will reach our destination at Base Camp, where you’ll have one of the most beautiful views in the world: the south face of Mount Everest. Tomorrow, we hike north from Lukla, and two days later, we will arrive in Namchee village, where we will rest for the nights of the 22nd and 23rd. For the next six days, we will slowly climb to the south camp, stopping at five different mountain cabins along the way. Our return journey will take us on a more direct route and is much shorter. If the weather is good, we should arrive back here by the afternoon of the 4th. We fly back to Kathmandu the following day.

W: Good afternoon, Southwest Airlines. What can I do for you?
M: Hello. I’m looking for a flight from Los Angeles to Houston. I tried to book a ticket on your website, but it was having problems.
W: I am sorry about the inconvenience. I’d be happy to help you with your reservation. What are your travel dates?
M: I need to be in Houston for a conference from October 12th to the 19th. I’m happy to arrive a couple days early or leave a couple days late if it means a lower price.
W: Let me check what we’ve got here…OK, if you fly to Houston on October 11 and come back on October 21, you’ll get the lowest price: $280 round trip.
M: Let’s go with the option.
W: Okay. What’s your name, please?
M: Sandra Rafferty, R-A-F-F-E-R-T-Y.
W: And your telephone number, please?
M: It’s 781-2461.
W: Okay. You’ll fly to Houston on October 11 and come back on October 21.
M: Yes, that’s it. Thank you, bye!
W: You are welcome!
