President Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to sign several executive orders aimed at restricting immigration. US media say he will sign an order tightening security along the Mexican border. He'll also be seeking tougher visa regulations for citizens from seven Middle East and African countries with predominantly Muslim populations. He tweeted that Wednesday would be a big day for national security.

In another tweet, the President expressed his concern about the level of violence in the city of Chicago. Reports say that already this year more than40 people have been murdered and 228 people have been shot. Mr. Trump said he would send in the FBI if Chicago did not fix, what he called, the horrible carnage.

The French President Francois Hollande has been meeting leaders of Colombia’s largest rebel movement the FARC in the west of the country. Mr. Hollande,accompanied by Colombia's President, offered financial support for de-mining programs.

Panama's Chief Prosecutor says 17 people have been charged with money laundering in connection with the bribery scheme involving the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht. He said the group included former officials and business people.

The largest annual mass migration on earth is underway in China with millions of people on the move before Chinese New Year on Friday. Many are returning home. Others are going abroad on holiday.

Ivory Coast, the defending champions, have crashed out of football's Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon. They lost 1-0 to Morocco, who go through to the quarterfinals along with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

And a 7-year-old Syrian girl known worldwide for her tweets from Aleppo has written an open letter to Donald Trump pleading for him to do something for the children of Syria because they deserve peace. Bana Alabed escaped from Aleppo last month and now lives in Turkey. BBC News.
