In communities, large and small, Americans are honoring US military members today. In Washington, President Obama placed wreath(花圈) at the Tomb of the Unknowns and the Vietnam War Memorial. In the Upstate New York community of * Lake, North Country Public Radio’s Brian Mann reports on the observances more typical of hometown across the US.

In Pakistan, officials say a drone missile attack in North Waziristan killed 4 suspected militants. NPR’s Julie McCarthy reports from Islamabad that the drone attack is just one of the many issues straining US-Pakistan relations.
The drone missile attack was the fourth in less than a week, and was thought to be insurgent high doubts in Pakistan tribe built. The accelerated pace comes amid delegate negotiations to reopen NATO supply lines the Pakistan blocked. While security cooperation has deteriorated, some analysts say there is still support within Pakistani senior ranks for the US attacks on militants. That can be public as the drones are hugely unpopular. US sources meanwhile have said the Pakistan * several thousand dollars for every NATO truck, used for overland * to Afghanistan. The result of the first round of Egyptian presidential election *. Kimberly Adams reports from Cairo that about 46% of the registered voters participated in historical election.
The winners of the first round were the Muslin Brotherhood candidate Muhammad Morsi, and former Mubarak Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq. Morsi led with more than 5.7 million votes, Shafiq, polling in 5.5 million. Neither of the winners took more than a quarter of the vote in a wide field which included candidates like former Foreign Minister *. Egypt’s presidential election commission rejected several appeals by losing candidates, saying some were not legally sound, and others returned in too late. The two winners now face each other in a runoff election next month. For NPR news, I’m Kimberly Adams in Cairo.
The markets on Wall Street were close today for the holiday. In Europe concern of the conditional of bank in Spain sent stocks into negative territory, but in Greece investors push the market close 7% up on news. That the pro-bailout party could win next month’s elections and keep Greece in the Eurozone.

Syrian government officials are now blaming Islam’s militants for the killings of more than 100 men, women and children in the community of Houla this weekend. Syrian government officials are also denying the government tanks shield the residential neighborhood. In a letter to the UN Security Council, Syria’s Foreign Minister says the country is in a state of self-defense against armed terrorist groups.
Spanish officials say a senior figure in the militant Basque separatist group Eta has been arrested. As Loran Ferrero reports in Madrid, the suspect was caught along within a * late Sunday.
Spanish officials describe the 30-year-old suspect as Eta’s most senior military commander. He and other Eta member were stopped in a stolen car with fake license plates in a town in southwest France. It was a part of joint operation by French and Spanish police who say the suspects were armed. Eta wants independence for Basque Provinces in Spain and France. It’s killed more than 800 people since the 1960s’ and it’s classified as a terrorism group by Spain, the European Union and the US. But the group’s ranks have been decimated(毁掉大部分) by waves of arrests. And it agree back in October to relinquish(放弃) its weapons for good. For NPR News, I’m Loran Ferrero in Madrid.
It is now tropical depression Beryl, but forecasters say heavy rain and gusting wind could make driving along the southeastern Atlantic coast difficult for some holiday travelers. The storm made landfall early today near Jackson Vale, Florida. About 40,000 customers lost power in the early hours of the storm. Forecasters say there is a risk of flooding from Florida to Georgia. Many of the regional Memorial Day celebrations have taken place in a drenching downpour.
