The US Senate has passed a sweeping tax reform bill, clearing the way for the birth first big legislative achievement of Donald Trump's presidency. Republican and Democratic Parties senators voted along party lines, narrowly approving the changes in the early hours in the morning. In a tweet, President Trump said they were a step closer to big tax cuts for working families and that he hoped the bill could be signed by Christmas.
US media are reporting that president Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner has been implicated in the investigation into claims that Russia interfered in the election process. The former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn has accused a very senior member of the president's transitional team of directing him to make contact with foreign governments.
The Hungary government has given the security forces more powers to contain and arrest following violent protest over last Sunday's presidential election. A partial recount of the votes is taking place.
State media in Syria say that military has intercepted Israeli missiles which struck Syrian government positions overnight near Damascus. The media reports also said the Israeli action led to material losses at the positions. Israel has not commented.
US officials say President Trump is likely to announce next week that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, in a move critics fear will inflame conflict in the region. Both Israelis and Palestinians claim the city as their capital.
Pope Francis is completing a visit to Bangladesh in Myanmar, during which the plight of Rohingya Muslim refugees has dominated. On Friday, he used the word "Rohingya" for the first time on his trip.
The Rugby League World Cup final is getting underway shortly in the Australian city of Brisbane, following what is widely considered as successful tournament. The host Australia are playing England.
