Saudi Arabia has cut diplomatic relations with Iranamid worsening tensions following the execution by Riyadh of a prominent ShiaMuslim cleric. The Saudi foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir accused Iran ofsupporting terrorism in the region. On Saturday, protestors in Tehran stormedthe Saudi embassy denouncing the execution of Sheikh Nemer al-Nemer and 46others. Kathryn Naji of the BBC's Persian Service has this report. “SaudiArabia announced its decision less than 24 hours after hardline demonstratorsstormed its embassy in Tehran setting it on fire. There were no diplomats orstaff at the embassy at the time of the attack. Now Iranian diplomats have beengiven 48 hours to leave Saudi Arabia, but neither side wants to escalate thetensions beyond their control. The two countries which represent the Sunni andShia strands of Islam are already locked in proxy wars in Yemen and in Syria.They know they have to pull back from the brink, but they also feel they haveto look and sound tough.”
The British foreign office says it's examining a video released by the Islamic Statemilitant group which appears to show the killing of five men accused of havingspied for Britain. In the film, a man with a British accent makes threats towardsthe UK. A young English speaking boy talks about killing unbelievers.
The governor of the Mexican state of Morelos has taken command of policeservices in 15 towns following the murder of a newly elected mayor on Saturday.Graco Ramirez said authorities would not be intimidated by organized crime, morefrom our America's editor Leonardo Rocha. “The mayor Gisele Mota was shot deadat her home less than 24 hours after taking office in the town of Temixco. Shewas one of many politicians backing the governor's proposals to remove powerfrom local police. Governor Ramirez said her murder was an attempt bycriminal gangs to defeat his plan. Morelos, just south of Mexico City, hasbecome one of the country's most violent states in recent years. Rival cartelscontrol drug trafficking and extortion rings in different towns.”
Sweden has introduced identity checks in an attempt to reduce the number ofmigrants arriving there via Denmark. Our Europe reporter Gavin Lee has more. “Morethan 160,000 people arrived in the country last year. In November, Swedenjoined with Germany and Austria in temporarily introducing random border checksin Europe's passport free Schengen zone. Today's measures are morecomprehensive and apply to all travelers arriving from Denmark by train, busand boat. Those traveling without papers have been warned they won't be allowedto continue their journey. It's the first time since 1950s that the controlshave been introduced and have been carried out in the Danish side of theboarder costing the Danes an estimated 150,000 dollars a day. BBC news.
Fighting is continuing at an Indian air force base near the border withPakistan which was stormed by militants early on Saturday. At least sevenIndian soldiers and four attackers have died so far at the Pathankot base. India'sHome Secretary said two gunmen were still at large.
There has been an earthquake in northeastern India near the borders withMyanmar and Bangladesh. Tremors have been felt across the region. Akbar Hossainin the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka has more details. “People in Dhaka were wokenat 5 am when the powerful earthquake struck. Hundreds of thousands came out oftheir homes and stayed on the streets fearing an aftershock. The United StatesGeological Service says the magnitude of earthquake was 6.8. The epicenter wasaround 400 kilometers from Dhaka in the Indian state of Manipur. Tens ofmillions of people across the region felt the tremor, but there was noimmediate report of causalities or damages to property.”
Police in the US state of Oregon have accused a group of armed protestors ofattempting to spark a national movement to overthrow the local and federalgovernments. They were urged to stay away from awildlife refuge which has been occupied by the protesters. The occupation wassparked by the planned jailing of two ranchers convicted of arson on federalland. It's not clear how many people are taking part in the antigovernmentdemonstration.
Police in California say they have arrested an armed robbery suspect with thehelp of a selfie he took with one of his alleged victims. Officer said18-year-old Victor Almanza Martinez is one of three men accused of stealing acar and personal belongings from four people last week. Before driving off, heis said to have exchanged information with one of a group of women and snappeda photo with her. BBC world news.
