A Sudanese Christian woman who had been sentenced to death renouncing. Islam has been freed from detention for a second time and has sought refuge with her family in the US Embassy in Khartoum. MeriamIbrahim was first released from death roll on Monday, but was then detained a day later as she tried to leave for the United States where her husband has citizenship. Her lawyer says she still faces charges of falsifying documents and can’t leave Sudan. Following her latest release, Mrs. Ibrahim told the BBC Arabic Service she remained a Christian and was in good health.
I would like to thank the Sudanese people and the Sudanese police. I’m really grateful to all of them. I would like to thank those who stood beside me.
Do you consider yourself as Christian?
Yes, and not just me, but the court considers that, too.
What’s your plan now?
I will leave it to God. I didn’t even have a chance to see my family after I got out of prison. What’s the latest news on Meriam Ibrahim?
The dispute is not between is not between the government and Meriam. The dispute is within the family and Meriam. The government is protecting Meriam because the family of Meriam is threatening to kill her because they believe that she ashamed the family by converting to Christianity. This is socially unacceptable.
Let me just break in there. And I mean, I hear what you are saying. You say that the basic complaint comes from the family. So now she’s been rearrested for false travel documents. What’s all that about?
Yeah, actually it was, you know, a drama done by the American Embassy and the Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan. All of a sudden, Meriam appeared in Khartoum Airport carrying an emergency travel document from the Republic of South Sudan. Everybody in the world knows that she is Sudanese. All of a sudden, she became a citizen of another country and carrying an emergency travel document from that country. So this is a violation to the immigration law in South Sudan. And it’s at the same time, it’s a violation to any immigration law worldwide. So this way she has been arrested and she has been interrogated, you know. But she has been released. Now she is free.
