London has just seen its 4th Africa Fashion Week. It’s a big exhibition and catwalk show designed to get people in the fashion industry such as buyers and big department stores interested in fabrics and fashion from Africa. Our arts correspondent Vincent Dowd went to take a look.
It’s one of the newer events in London fashion’s calendar but there’s real media interest in the catwalk at Africa Fashion Week and a growing number of exhibitors. Bright colors are everywhere. Founder of the event in 2011:
It’s for designers who are inspired by Africa, so we’ve got a lot of western designers.

Yes, people are beginning to take more interest in African-inspired fashion. So it’s like a fashion revolution. It can’t be ignored.

Tell me about the fashion world, the fashion industry in Senegal.
Senegalese women are really beautiful. I’m not saying that cuz I’m Senegalese, but in terms of color and texture and fabric, we’re really good. Oh, we definitely design for every woman. And I think it is important for me to dress a Chinese and a Japanese to bring awareness to African fabric. It’s not only made for black skin.
My clothes are for plus-size women. I make the clothes more contemporary. The clothes are more contemporary and wearable by the western women. And our, majorities of the customers are western women who just like the prints. They like the cuts.
How interested are fashion buyers in African or African flavored fashion?
There’s been a sudden influx and interest in African inspired prints.
Most of the exhibitors are female. There are now Africa Fashion Weeks in Paris and New York, too. There is a sense we’ll be seeing a lot more of African fashion selling beyond Africa and designers in Europe and America looking to Africa for inspiration.
