What is transition?

Transition, as related to literacy, is the transfer of reading and writing skills from one language to another.

This transition may be

• from the mother tongue (L1) to a second language (L2), or
• from a second language (L2) to the mother tongue (L1).

Some people distinguish between the terms transition and transfer. In the Literacy bookshelf, the terms are used interchangeably.
