2018年国家年度教师奖颁给了英语和数学教师曼迪·曼宁,她在华盛顿州的斯波坎向难民和移民学生教授英语和数学。
Hi, I am Mandy Manning, the 2018 National Teacher of the Year. This experience has been completely surreal. I don't know that I could have imagined being named the National Teacher of the Year. Thank you to the Council of Chief state school officers and the selection committee for this tremendous honor. And thank you to my family, my colleagues and my fellow State Teachers of the year. And thank you to the teachers working hard in classrooms across the country on behalf of students every day. The one thing that anchors me and teachers across the country is our students. I am honored and humbled to be the vehicle through which my students may tell their stories over the next year.
I am here for Dahveed, a future IT specialist who hopes to one day be able to attend University. I am here for Tamara who is currently studying pre-med at Eastern Washington University. I am here for Safa Antara both future elementary school teachers and I am here for Salomon and goofy she who believed that the United States is the place where they have found the center of their lives where they can have dreams and hopes to be someone you see my students are immigrants and refugees brand new to our nation I teach in the newcomer Center at Ferris High School in Spokane Washington all of the students who walk through my classroom door have three things in common one they are just learning English two they have escaped trauma and are building new lives in our nation and three they are focused and determined to be productive citizens of our United States. Most importantly, they succeed. Take Safa from Sudan who recently became a citizen she had a fourth-grade education when she arrived but graduated in just four years and is now a sophomore at University her Hussein from Iraq who came at 20 years old but now has a successful cosmetology business Jeff from Haiti who studies sociology at Whitworth University to be a counselor and now Druze and Mohammed from Syria both profoundly deaf learning American Sign Language to attend Gallaudet University over the next year I will be sharing my student stories and their messages throughout our nation they have profound insights into our country I asked my students earlier this year to write a message they would want to share with the nation if I was named National Teacher of the Year. They are stories of hope and success. One in particular is from Sultan, a refugee from Syria. He escaped war and came to the United States where he says he hopes our country recognizes.
Mandy Manning
We are a role model and focuses on being peacemakers. Over the next year, I want students to know I am here for refugee and immigrant students for the kids in the Gay Straight Alliance and for all the girls I've coached over the years to send them the message that they are wanted they are loved they are enough and they matter I encourage those listening parents teachers and students to go out today seek and experience you have never had before get uncomfortable challenge your own perceptions to find clarity be fearless be kind meet someone new and build a connection.
Thank you for this honor and this opportunity I will not take it lightly.
