Teaching Reflection

Dear distinguished judges and teachers,

    Today I’m very happy to have this chance to reflect my teaching.

My today’s lesson is to get students to learn to describe people’s looks in simple English, it’s a little hard to go on with this lesson  in a traditional teaching way. In order to have an interesting class and establish a good learning situation, I extensively integrated educational technology into today’s teaching content. I made a multimedia courseware including designation of the important points and the difficult points and a lot of funny pictures. The pupils’ attention was immediately concentrated on today’s class. The class was all interested in it, doing all the activities very carefully and excitingly. So from the very beginning it became an active and helpful class.

A natural and smooth teaching procession plays a very important role in primary English classroom teaching. I designed several steps (warming-up, lead-in, presentation, drills, practice,  consolidation, summary, etc), from easy to difficult, from simple to complicated, from mechanical to meaningful. Each step was transferred smoothly.

Taking into account the fact that the fourth grade children have studied a semester of English, and they have a certain basis, I organized today’s class all in English---Teach English Through English, which ensures that the students are immersed in an atmosphere of learning English. This undoubtedly increased the amount of language input.

According to our national English Curriculum Standards, I applied various instructional strategies to engage, empower, and support my students in developing comprehensive language abilities. ”Learning by doing. Doing in learning. Learning for doing.” The ultimate aim of learning a language is to do things with it.

To give students an interesting way to consolidate what they learned, I made a chant by myself. Chant has a lively rhythm and is easy for students to read aloud.

In order to encourage students to assume active roles in teaching and learning process, I played a facilitator’s role. At the very beginning I divided the class into four groups. This way, the whole class was based on discussion. The students are encouraged to open their mouths and talk bravely.

A clear and well-designed blackboard writing will surely impress the students. I tried to make the blackboard into three parts. The middle was the key area, where important language points or sentence patterns would be demonstrated. Areas on both sides were for games and other things. Students would be clear about teaching content from my blackboard writing design.

I gave particular attention to the assessing my students learning. I emphasized the process of learning. I designed various teaching and learning activities to develop their multi-intelligence. For example, ”listen-and guess”, ”listen and say”, “point and say”, “listen and draw”.

I tried to use task-based teaching method in today’s class. The lesson was started with language tasks and proceeded to real life tasks. I think it very effective to foster our students’ communication abilities in English. Thus, I designed several tasks on student-centered basis. For example, Make a survey, etc.

The main form of language learning is still classroom teaching. But it should be complemented with out-of-class acquisition. At the end of class, I arranged oral work—ask students to try to describe their parents’ looks to their classmates, which would make students use today’s drills in their daily life.

A nice cooperation between teacher and students is of course very important. But due to limited time in keeping touch with students, I found our cooperation in today’s class not so satisfactory. And not all students had enough time or chance to practice patterns. I will try my best to improve myself.

Finally, I want to say that for any method using it properly, it'll become a good one; if not ,it can also turn out to be a bad one .So whether it is a good  one or a bad one ,it remains to be seen how we will use it. Besides, teaching method is flexible, we can't only use some method. We should choose proper or combine many methods together on the basis of our own students.
