All right, let me tell you about our Australian Bush Pass. The Bush Pass is a great way to travel around Australia. The package is only ＄800 including all buses and one flight. And if you’re a student it has 5% off. The pass is good for a year, so you can take lots of time to see everything. You can start anywhere along the route, so it doesn’t matter which city you fly from.

If you want to spend your three weeks’ vacation visiting the most important places in Australia, here is a route. Let’s say you start from Sydney. From Sydney, you take a bus and go southwest to Melbourne. From Melbourne you head northwest to Adelaide and then north to Alice Springs. Ayers Rock is nearby. From Alice Springs you fly northeast to Cairns. That’s a good place to go diving. The final route is south to Sydney.

M: We stayed with my uncle. He lives in London.

W: What did you do in London?

M: We went shopping in Oxford Street. Oxford Street is one of the best places to shop in London. I bought a great pair of jeans there.

W: What else did you do?

M: We went to see a musical. We saw the show Cats. It was wonderful! I loved the songs and the dancing.

W: Did you go anywhere else in England?

M: We went to stay with my aunt in York.

W: Where’s York?

M: York is in the northeast of England. There’s a big church there, and a castle, and a very old wall around the city.

W: Like the Great Wall of China?

M: A little bit, but York’s city walls are much smaller. It was fun walking around the city on the walls.

W: What was the food like?

M: Wonderful. Both my uncle and my aunt run Chinese restaurants!

W: Surely having a grandmother at home can help a young wife a lot with her housew ork, don’t you think?

M: Yes, I think this is true. But remember the old people themselves are often against the idea of going to live with the young family. You see, modern houses and flats are very small, much smaller than the sort of homes people used to live in.

W: And when Grandma gets very old, the situation becomes even worse, doesn’t it?

M: Yes. It’s likely that old people may go into a nursing home, but it’s not as simple as that. Because of improvements in medical science, people live longer than ever before. The birth rate has fallen. This means that a smaller working population is having to provide for a large number of old people in need of care and attention. The number of old people’s homes provided by the state is strictly limited. There are private nursing homes, but the cost is out of reach of the average family.

W: And how do you see the situation developing in the future?

M: Wel l, obviously a lot of money is going to have to be spent. But it’s still difficult persuading people to do this. There aren’t many votes for politicians in providing nursing homes for the old people.

There’s a holiday next week and I can’t decide what to do. I have a lot of work to do at home, and this would be a good chance to do it. But I’d rather not spend the holiday that way. I can work at home all the rest of the year.

Last year I went north to the mountains. Everything was beautiful, but it is too cold this time of year. And it’s really too far to go for a short holiday. I have decided that this is not a good time to go to the mountains. But I do want to go some place.

Perhaps this would be a good chance to go to the beach. I like to go for walks along the seashore in the warm sunshine and watch the water. It’s only about eighty miles and I could get there in about two hours. After thinking it over, I’m sure that this is a better time for the seashore than the mountains. I guess I’ll plan to go to the beach next week.

Oh, here’s a letter from Jim. He says he is going to his house in the mountains for the holiday, and he wants me to go with him. After giving it some more thought, I guess it wasn’t really too cold last year, and perhaps it might rain at the seashore and then I wouldn’t enjoy it at all. The mountains are only 300 miles away. I think I’ll write to Jim right now and tell him I’ll go with him.
