The number of abortions has risen by 8 per cent over the past decade with more than a third now involving women who have previously had terminations.
Official figures show that almost half of unwanted pregnancies are being ended early by women taking the “abortion pill”, rather than undergoing a surgical procedure.
Fewer teenage girls are having abortions than in previous years while the number of pregnant women from Ireland coming to England and Wales for terminations is at a 40-year low.
