Phil And I'm Phil. We've got a question from one of our listeners.
Question Greetings! I was wondering if you could tell me the differences between 'as well as', 'in addition to', 'moreover' and 'furthermore'. Thank you!
Phil These are all expressions that we can use to add information, so it's good to look at how they're different.
Phil 'As well as' is probably more common in spoken English. 'In addition to' is a bit more formal. Notice that both of these expressions can put a slight emphasis on the item that doesn't follow 'as well as' or 'in addition to'.
Jiaying 在英语口语交流中,搭配 “as well as” 比 “in addition to” 更常用。就正式程度而言,“in addition to” 比 “as well as” 更正式。注意:这两个搭配都可以用来强调在句子中与它们引出的名词所并列的名词部分。听两个例句。
Examples I'm going to Seoul soon, so I've started studying Korean as well as Japanese. (我很快就要去首尔了,所以除了日语以外,我也开始学韩语了。)
There's a bus service now in addition to the train. The bus is often much cheaper. (除了火车以外,现在还通公共汽车。坐公共汽车通常要便宜得多。)
Jiaying 搭配 “as well as” 和 “in addition to” 还可以用于句首。注意:我们可以使用不带介词 “to” 的副词搭配 “in addition”,但它的后面跟的是一句完整的话。请听例句,第一个例句中使用了 “as well as”,第二个和第三个例句中都使用了 “in addition”。
Examples As well as playing football, I've just started playing hockey. It's good to try new sports! (除了踢足球以外,我还刚开始打曲棍球。尝试新的运动是一件好事!)
I've been studying Japanese for years. In addition, I've started studying Korean. (我学日语已经很多年了。除此之外,我又开始学习韩语。)
The train is good. In addition, there's a bus service. (火车很好。除此之外,还有公共汽车服务。)
Phil Next, we've got 'furthermore' and 'moreover'. These both sound a lot more formal than 'as well as' and 'in addition to'. They are far more likely to be used in written rather than spoken language.
Examples Our finances are a problem because we have not recruited enough students. Furthermore, our costs have increased. (我们的资金是个问题,因为没有招到足够的学生。此外,我们的成本也增加了。)
The restaurant is successful because it has had very favourable reviews. Moreover, the location is very well-suited. (这家餐馆之所以成功是因为它收到了非常好的评价。此外,地理位置也非常好。)
Phil So, the main differences between 'in addition to', 'in addition', 'as well as', 'furthermore' and 'moreover' are the levels of formality and whether they are used as prepositions or adverbs.
Jiaying “In addition to”、“in addition”、“as well as”、“furthermore” 和 “moreover” 之间的主要区别在于它们的正式程度不同,以及它们在句子中是充当介词成分还是作副词使用。
